If you have any questions regarding the way I graded your essay, please let me know.

April 21st

  • I have posted the question for Essay #4. Answers are due via email (ernest@ernestmorgan.com) by midnight the evening of Friday the 8th of April.
  • Academic dishonesty of any kind, including plagiarism and collaboration, will result in an automatic zero for the assignment in question. Successful essays will be based on a critical analysis of the questions, not a simple regurgitation of the facts presented in the text and the lecture notes.
  • By collaboration, I mean that you cannot split up the work with a colleague. Your answers should be your own work. My advice on completing the essay is the following:
    1. Read the assigned material in the text and the Lecture Notes.
    2. Read the comments of your classmates on the discussion forum and my emailed comments concerning the discussion questions for Chapters 9 through 12.
    3. Print out a copy of Essay #4.
    4. Construct an outline of how you plan to attack the essay. Your outline should be based upon a seven paragraph format - one paragraph for the introduction, a paragraph for each of the five concepts and finally a concluding paragraph.
    5. Sit down in a quite place and resolve to write a 'bad' answer -- without the book! I say a 'bad' answer, because it is most important at this stage to get something down on paper. Don't pressure yourself to write something perfect immediately. If you do that, you will still be waiting to start your writing two weeks from now. Just get something down on paper, and then critique it. I also suggest that you keep the book closed when you write. With the book opened, it will be very difficult to write your answer in your own words. Your answer should be approximately two to three single-spaced pages in length -- about a 1000 to 1500 words.
    6. Once you have written your initial answer, review it for flaws.
    7. Go back and review the material in the Lecture Notes, the text, and the discussion forum.
    8. Remember the key to the assignment is to demonstrate your mastery of the political concepts by incorporating them, in detail, into your examination of the topic. Don't become overly concerned with the topic to the detriment of a detailed discussion of the political concepts.
    9. Whenever you have a question about any of the material, send it to me! I will respond. I will not review drafts, but if you would like my input on a skeletal outline of your essay, I'd be happy to look over your outline.
    10. Be sure to send your answers via email (no attachments) to me by midnight Friday the 6th. There will be an 8 hour grace period extending until 8am on Saturday the 7th. I suggest however that you don't plan on using it, for I won't accept anything after that point, 8am Saturday. The grace period is only meant to allow folks a chance to resubmit answers that they had problems submitting in the first place. Once I receive your answers, I will send a confirmation reply, usually it will come within a few hours -- unless you send your answer late in the evening. If don't have a confirmation message from me, you know that I did not receive you answers, and you will need to resubmit. My advice is to summit your essays several days in advance of the deadline. You have two weeks to complete this assignment, please do not wait until the last minute, for then you place all your hard work at peril to a computer glitch.
    11. Please title the subject line of your email, POL 120: Essay #4. Also, be sure that your full name appears near the top of the text of your message.
    12. As always, if you are experiencing any difficulties, let me know as soon as they occur, and we will work together to solve them.

  • Discussion Forum Tips: Here are a few tips for keeping our discussions clear.
    1. When you are responding to the message of a fellow student, begin the text of your message with IRT and their name. IRT is an abbreviation for In Response To. For example, imagine that you are responding to a message submitted by Jill. You would begin the text of your message:
      1.
        IRT Jill, .........

Now there is no need to use the IRT convention when you are responding to one of my initial questions, for then it is pretty obvious to whom you are responding. Just use the IRT tool when responding to the submissions of fellow students. By using the IRT convention, I do believe we'll make the weekly discussions much more easy to follow.
    2. Please do remember that to receive full participation credit, students should plan on responding to at least two questions posted by the instructor and three responses submitted by other students. Students waiting till the last Friday of the discussion to make their initial response will be counted as present for participation grade purposes, but will receive no additional participation credit.
    3. When submitting material, remember this is a discussion, keep your messages short -- long, wordy messages kill a good discussion. Also, remember that you must respond at least once to a message of a fellow student -- though you should plan to do that more than once.  Again, this is your area to discuss the material, use it! I will not be a regular participant in the forum, but will observe it daily and will occasionally jump in to the discussion. From past experience, I have found that my participation in the online discussions seems to really hamper the overall success of the discussion. At the conclusion of this discussion, I will send out via email my comments on the material discussed. If you have questions about the material during the week, please do send them to me in an email message, and I will send my response out to the entire class.
    4. Please do not submit messages such as, "I agree" or "Good point". It is fine to agree or to praise your classmates, but tell us why you agree, or why you think it is a good point. One or two word responses add nothing to the discussion and just make it more difficult for us to find the submission which are substantive.
    5. When you wish to respond to a message, click on the Respond to this message link, found at the bottom right of the box. Be sure that you have the exact message to wish you which to respond open (that is, you are reading it) when you click on the Respond to this message, otherwise your message will not appear in the correct location.
    6. To return to the of message index, click on the Return to Index link, found at the top right of the box.
    7. When responding to a message, please also enter the title of the message to which you are responding into the field for Message Title. For example, if you are responding to a message titled Liberalism, then enter Liberalism in the field for the Message Title. Unfortunately, the Network54 software does not do this automatically, but they assure me they are working on it.
    8. Once you have entered the Message Title (remember it is the same as the title as the message to which you are responding), and your Message Text, click on the Respond! button at the bottom of the box.
    9. Please do remember this rule: Never click on the Instructor Posting link seen at the top right of the box when the index listing of message titles is displayed. This is only for me to post our initial questions for discussion. To ensure the correct positioning of your message, you must always, click only on the Respond to this message link for the exact message to which you wish to respond.
